Make Student Hiring Easier by Accessing Funding Support
MRU’s Career Services team works hard to support MRU students as they extend their learning beyond the classroom, and its employer partners when they set out to hire students for work terms. To help make the process easier, we research potential funding sources that can benefit employers looking to hire MRU students.

Funding Requirements & Deadlines
Each subsidy program is unique in its application requirements and submission deadlines, which take place at different times during the year. Here is a brief overview of some of the subsidy programs that may be available:
- Student Work Placement Programs (SWPP) provide wage subsidies to employers offering work-integrated learning placements through several SWPP providers.. Participating employers may qualify to receive up to 50% (max. $5000) reimbursement of a student’s salary—or up to 70% (max. $7000) reimbursement for underrepresented students." Funding for some SWPP programs, like Magnet Student Work Placement, resurge at the beginning of each semester but applications close once the available funds are fully distributed. There are numerous providers of SWPP, which are detailed below.
- Canada Summer Jobs program provides wage subsidies for not-for-profit organizations and public sector employees, as well as for private companies with 50 or fewer full-time employees, so they can hire young people aged 15 to 30. The program's hard and fast deadline is mid-January.
- MITACS Business Strategy Internship (BSI) provides “ $10,000–$15,000 per internship (50% funded by Mitacs) for students and recent graduates to support business innovation projects. Internships typically last 4–6 months. Employers must partner with a post-secondary institution and provide matching funds.” funding for eligible internships; funding is available for the fall, winter, and spring semesters.
- Youth Employment Program (NRC IRAP) provides up to $30,000 per graduate (aged 15–30) for 6–12 month internships in R&D, engineering, market analysis, and tech services. Eligible to Canadian SMEs partnered with NRC IRAP.
- Science Horizons Youth Internship program provides up to $30K in wage/training subsidies for employers hiring recent grads (under 30) in environmental STEM roles. Internships last 6–12 months.
