1. Where did you do your internship while in MRU Journalism?
Okotoks Western Wheel
2. Knowing what you know now, what advice would you have liked to give yourself as you started your internship?
Take advantage of every opportunity to connect with your co-workers and clients, not only on work-related topics, but personal matters as well. The workplace has never been strictly professional.
3. What is something that really stands out when you think about your time at MRU Journalism?
The close-knit community and emphasis on relationship-building.
4. How transferrable were the skills you acquired in your education?
Extremely, I use these skills everyday. J-school taught me how to harness curiosity and ask the right questions to get at the heart of the matter. Truly taking an interest in the organization's direction and the people who make it successful has propelled my career growth.
5. In your career, what type of work has most excited you, and why?
Surprisingly, leading a team. People are complex and I enjoy the challenge of understanding why people do certain things and harnessing their positive momentum.
6. What is the most important but unwritten rule that you’ve learned on the job?
Senior leadership wants to be challenged (respectfully, of course). They want to hear feedback on their ideas, the inherent risks, and new, innovative approaches. Speak up, ask for what you want, and don't be afraid to take on new opportunities that you maybe don't have expertise in. Skills are transferable.
7. Who has most inspired you along the way, and why?
My dad worked for the same company his entire life, holding several different jobs and working his way up to a VP position before retiring recently. That takes dedication, to consistently choose to support your team and employer's goals year after year, even when they may not align with you personally.
8. Is there anything else you would like to share about your experience in MRU Journalism?

It provided a solid foundation to grow my career and thrive in a corporate setting.
