The first 6 weeks of university are a crucial time that shapes your entire post-secondary journey. 

 

Research shows that the habits, attitudes, and connections you make during the first six weeks will influence your student success.

You can expect to: 

  • Be exposed to new experiences
  • Seek support and get connected with a student service
  • Build a routine of study habits

Connecting with peers, faculty, and campus resources early on makes you more confident, resilient, and prepared to manage the challenges you will face in university life. 

These first 6 weeks matter because they set the foundation for everything that comes next. 

 

 Sept. 4 -12: Start Strong

  • Explore spaces & services offered around campus
  • Get organized, find a system that works for you - attend a Time Management workshop!
  • Review your course syllabus put important deadlines in your calendar!
  • Attend a Weeks of Welcome event 

 Hot Tip: Write every deadline in one place (such as your google calendar) so nothing sneaks up on you.

 Sept. 15 -19: Get Connected, Get Involved, Get Started

  • Explore SAMRU - see all it has to offer
  • Visit your instructor's office hours - introduce yourself to your professors
  • Use support services - explore various opportunities across campus. Learn more Sept. 18 at the Service Expo
  • Say HI to someone New! You might meet a lifelong friend.

 Hot Tip: Going to office hours once early on makes it easier to ask for help later.

Sept. 22 -26: Get Involved On Campus

  • Join a club on campus, volunteer, and make sure to attend a Journey to Indigenization event.
  • Visit the Library -You can study here, create something new at the Maker Space or the visit the Production studio! 
  • Hit the Rec Centre -try a fitness class, intramurals, and go to a Cougars game (free with your OneCard)! 
  • Attend one of SAMRU's or MRU's events.

 Hot Tip: Getting involved now makes the campus feel like home faster.

Sept. 29 - Oct.3: Keep Up, Check In, Ask for Help

  • Ask questions in class
  • Check on your studying & self care habits
  • Try the "Don't Waste Your Study Time" workshop
  • Stay on top of required readings & assignments
  • Ask for help! Before it is too late - connect with a faculty member, your advisor or Early Support.

Oct. 6 -10: Rest, Reflect, Refocus

  • Take time to recharge, you’ve worked hard
  • Reflect on what is working (and what isn't)
  • Try the "Test Taking Strategies" workshop
  • Use Wellness Services to support your mental, phyiscal and overall well-being
  • Explore Faith & Culture with MRU’s Multi-Faith & Spirituality Team! Join the Faith Hop on Thursday, Oct. 9

 Hot Tip: Self-care isn’t a reward — it’s fuel that keeps you performing your best.

Oct.13 -17: Use Your Break Wisely

  • No classes, but  campus services are still open
  • Catch up on readings & assignments
  • Review class notes to prep for midterms
  • Relax and enjoy your time off

Hot Tip: Pick one “must-do” academic task and one fun activity — balance is key.

Oct.20 - 24: Look Ahead to Finals

  • Do not book travel during the exam period, your exams will not be moved.
  • Start to prepare for finals early
  • Make classes your priority
  • Don’t wear yourself out, take breaks
