Ghana Field School 2022
The field school to Ghana offers students the opportunity of a lifetime to visit Ghana, one of the most peaceful countries on the African continent, and experience Ghanaian hospitality at its finest. Students will meet with some of the Ghanaian writers that they will be studying on the trip, relate text to context in experiential learning at its best, see wildlife like elephants at close range in the Mole National Park, and visit cultural and historical sites like slave castles. Participants will have an opportunity to do volunteer work in a basic school, and also bathe in the sun on the beautiful beaches of Ghana while earning six (6) MRU credits.
The ENGL 4900 course, Travel Studies in Literature: Texts and Contexts –African Women’s Writing, will be taught by Dr. Yaw Asante. The ENGL 3900 course, Travel Studies in Literature: Words and Ideas – Ghana Field Studies in the Environmental Humanities, will be taught by Dr. Robert Boschman, Chair of the Department of English, Languages, and Cultures. During the trip, students will explore some aspects of the African landscape; Ghana encompasses significant socio-cultural, political, economic and historical elements that reflect the continental picture.

COVID-19 and International Education Programs
We are currently continuing to plan for spring 2022 semester travel opportunities but the ability to run these programs and have students participate will be dependent on the situation at the time of the program, decisions made by MRU regarding travel-related activities and on the travel advice, warnings and information provided by the Provincial and Federal Government.

ENGL 3900 - Travel Studies in Literature: Words & Ideas (GNED Cluster 2, Tier 3) - 3 credits
ENGL 4900 - Travel Studies in Literature: Texts & Contexts (GNED Cluster 3, Tier 3) - 3 credits
Eligibility
This field school is open to all students. Recommended preparation is a 2000-level English course or its equivalent. This pre-requisite may be waived.
Interested students should confirm their ability to apply the two courses either as ENGL credits or GNED credits with their academic advisor prior to joining the the field school.

Pre-Departure Classes: May, 2022 (exact dates to be confirmed once the group is formed)

Application Process
Before applying for a field school, students should ensure theyhave familiarized themselves with the general field school requirements and policies.
To apply for the Ghana field school, sumit the following by the application deadline:
- Field School Application Form (with all reqeusted supporting doucments attached in PDF format);
- A one-page statement of purpose (letter) describing your study abroad goals and interest in particpating in the the Ghana Field School.
Application Deadline
Completed application packages must be submitted online by 4:00 pm on December 13, 2021.
Program Costs
Ghana Field School Program Fees - $3,198.00
The Ghana Field School Program Fees include: accommodation in Ghana, Ground Transportation in Ghana, faculty and assistant expenses, MRU administration fee, all field school related field trip/activity/entrance fees and gratuities.
Program Fees are payable according to the payment deadlines outlined in the following table. Instructions on paying program fees will be provided to particpants following acceptance into the program.

*Initial program deposit is non-refundable and secures the participant's place in he program. Possibility of refund of subsequent deposits due to withdrawal from the program will be assessed and determined at the time of withdrawal.
Program fees do not include course tuition or additional student expenses (see below).
MRU Tuition & General Fees
MRU tuition and fees for ENGL 3900 and ENGL 4900 (total: 6 credits) are in addition to the program fees and will be assessed to each student's account in April 2022. They are payable to MRU by the spring 2022 fee payment deadline.
Additional Student Expenses
Student are responsible for all additional expenses not included in the program fees such as return airfare to Ghana, passport, tourist visa, trip interruption and cancellation insurance, travel health and medical insurance, food and bottled water, immunizations & medical testing , travel essentials, personal spending, etc. Estimates of additional student costs are available at the Information Session and from the Office of International Education.
Financial Assistance
Ghana field school participants will receive a $1,000 grant from the MRU International Mobility Award to use towards the costs associated with the field school. Further information about this, other grants and student loan funding for field schools can be found here.
