Personalized 30-Minute Appointments
Build the skills to thrive at university. In a 30-minute appointment, a Writing and Learning Strategist can help you tackle assignments, strengthen your study habits, and get constructive feedback on your writing (especially while you’re still drafting!). Whether you’re encountering challenges in your courses or building on your academic strengths, it’s your time to focus on becoming a stronger student.
Writing your first-ever university paper? Polishing an honour's thesis or capstone project? No matter what the assignment is, you can work with a Strategist on it. Meet for your appointment online or in person, and leave with practical strategies you can use right away.

Yes! Students working with a group can book an hour-long appointment with a Strategist.
- Students can book an initial 30-minute spot and then contact sls@mtroyal.ca to extend the appointment for one hour (when available).
- When requesting the extension, please be ready with the names and MRU email addresses of any group members who will be attending.
In-person appointments are held in EL2100 (in the Riddell Library & Learning Centre).
Online appointments use Google Meet. We will send an email with the online meeting room link to your MRU email account the day of your appointment (at least 5 minutes before the appointment start time).
Please have your assignment instructions ready so you can share them with the Learning Strategist during the appointment.
You can also bring any materials that could be helpful for the appointment. For example,
- A calendar or planner
- Class notes from lecture
- The textbook you’re reading
- Sources (e.g., books, articles, etc.) you might be using for an assignment
- An outline for a paper
For appointments related to writing, you do not need to have a complete draft ready! We can often help more if you come at an earlier stage in the writing process (e.g., when you have a rough outline, or a couple of body paragraphs written).
We won't edit your paper, but we can definitely help you learn how to edit your own writing more effectively!
Cancel at least 2 hours before your appointment, or it counts as a no-show. Please give us as much notice as possible so we can serve other students.
Use the link provided in the confirmation email to cancel.
If you have 2 no-shows, you will be unable to book further appointments until the next semester.
We can discuss useful test-taking strategies for different types of exam questions (e.g., multiple choice, problem-solving, short answer, essay).
If you are working on an exam (e.g., take-home exam), we cannot look at or provide feedback about your answers.
