What is measles?
Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that spreads easily through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Symptoms typically emerge seven to 21 days after exposure.
Symptoms to watch for
The initial symptoms can resemble a cold and may include:
- High fever
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis)
- Koplik spots: Small white spots inside the mouth, which may appear two to three days after the onset of symptoms.
- A characteristic red, blotchy rash typically develops three to seven days after the onset of the other symptoms, usually starting on the face and spreading down the body
What to do if you experience symptoms
If you develop symptoms, please:
- Stay home and avoid contact with others. Do not go to public places, including work, classes, camps, shops, etc.
- Call Health Link at 811 immediately. Inform them that you may have been exposed to measles and describe your symptoms. They will provide guidance and direct you to appropriate healthcare services if necessary.
- Do not visit a clinic or emergency room without calling Health Link first. This helps prevent the spread of the virus in healthcare settings.
Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine in Alberta
The most effective way to prevent measles is through vaccination with the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine.
- In Alberta, the MMR vaccine is offered free of charge to all eligible individuals as part of the routine childhood immunization schedule.
- Adults who were born in or after 1970, and who have not received two doses of a measles-containing vaccine, or who are unsure of their immunization history, are also eligible for a free MMR vaccine.
How to access the MMR vaccine
- Check your immunization status: Access your immunization records through the Alberta MyHealthRecords portal or contact your regional health authority where you were immunized.
- Book an appointment: Call the Immunization Booking Line at 811 (8 a.m. – 6 p.m.) if you’re in the Calgary area.
- For other Alberta regions, please contact your local public health or community health center.
- The MMR vaccine is only available through public health units and cannot be accessed at Mount Royal University Health Services or the Pharmacy in Wyckham House.
Additional health precautions
To minimize the risk of transmission:
- Surgical masks: Masks are available for free at the Cougars Campus Store or through Environmental Health & Safety (ehs@mtroyal.ca) while supplies last.
