Remember when you were first starting University and everything was new and different and sometimes challenging? Moving into the work world after graduation is a transition as well!

  • Spread out some of the work and stress by starting the transition early. Use the resources under Navigating Your Degree to get the most out of your time at MRU (academics and extra curricular), and start accessing the job search resources through Career Services early.
  • Attend the Career and Recruitment Fair (usually held in March) to get an idea of key employers and types of positions available in your field.
  • Career Services has tip sheets for improving your resume, searching for postings, preparing for interviews, portfolios, your online presence (eg. LinkedIn) and networking. They'll also edit your resume (just email it to them!) and practice interview questions with you. Their job bank includes postings specifically for grads!
  • Having an 'interview outfit' ready for when you are called saves stress later. If you are short on funds, consider resources like the Walk in Closet.
  • Know how to order transcripts (official and unofficial) through your mymru.ca account in case an interested employer requests them.
  • Use your student membership in professional associations to attend networking events and access industry specific job boards.
  • Transitions can be overwhelming and you may have to choose between multiple paths. Remember you have access to Counselling Services who can help you with your decision making!
  • Apply your learning in your new job. Some library resources you used for assignments are still available to you as alumni through the MRU Library.
  • Review other Alumni perks and maintain your network with the MRU community.
