Alexandria Farmer completed her undergraduate studies at UNBC earning a Biology Degree in 1996 majoring in plants, insects, and their interactions. Upon returning to Calgary, she completed her Environmental Technology Certificate in 1998 and began teaching at MRU at this time. Over the years Alex has taught a broad range of courses including Introduction to Cell Biology, Evolution of Eukaryotes, Vertebrate zoology, Invertebrate zoology, a variety of Ecology courses as well as a variety of Anatomy and Physiology courses, Embryology, and the new block course Common Ground which focuses on land-based learning, intertwining western science and indigenous knowledge together. Alex won the “Academic Teaching Excellence Award” in 2010.

Alex earned her MSc Ecology from the University of Calgary in 2014 studying native bumble bee abundance and colony fitness in the Eastern slopes of Kananaskis in response to levels of clearcut logging activity. At this point she took on the role as Senior Lab Coordinator.

In 2017 Alex co-founded the Alberta Native Bee Council and has been an active volunteer with this society, remaining very passionate about native bee education through public outreach, attending yearly events, giving talks, and carrying out a variety of native bee habitat and gardening workshops and walks.

On campus Alex was part of the Plan Bee initiative to create native bee which you can read about by visiting the links below.
