Profile:
Animals live in ever-changing and challenging environments, causing them to produce stress responses that trigger changes in their behaviour and physiology. Dr. Levi Newediuk is interested in how these changes help animals survive and reproduce despite the challenges they face, and what happens when stress responses stop working as they should.
After completing his PhD at Memorial University of Newfoundland and postdoctoral research at the University of Manitoba, Dr. Newediuk joined the Department of Biology as an Assistant Professor of Ecology at Mount Royal University in 2025. He studies large mammals, learning about their stress, physiology, and behaviour from DNA and other biological samples. Recently, he and his colleagues at the University of Manitoba showed that polar bears in Hudson Bay are aging about two years faster over their lifetimes because of climate change, evidence that changing environments are leaving a lasting mark on animal health.
