MRU's Framework for Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI)
The Framework for Responsible Artificial Intelligence provides a principles-based approach to the responsible use of AI in teaching, learning, research, and operations at Mount Royal.
Developed by MRU’s AI Steering Group and approved by Deans’ Council, the Framework supports thoughtful use of AI that protects privacy and security, and aligns with MRU’s mission and values.
Rather than applying a single rule to all situations, the Framework encourages areas to be clear about expectations for AI use in each context. It also does not create new policy: it is intended to guide responsible AI use within existing policies, procedures, agreements and guidelines.
Guiding principles
The Framework identifies six guiding principles to guide the responsible use of AI on campus.
| Human-centred AI should augment, not replace, human judgment, learning, creativity and pedagogy. |
Transparency and Trust Meaningful uses of AI should be disclosed clearly. |
| Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility AI should be used to reduce, not amplify, bias or discrimination; tools and outputs should meet accessibility standards. |
Privacy, Security and Data Protection Only institutionally approved AI tools and platforms should be used when working with confidential, sensitive or personal data. |
| Accountability and Academic Integrity People, not tools, remain responsible for the integrity of their work and decisions. |
Mindfulness, Literacy and Continuous Improvement AI use should be grounded in an awareness of the impacts on learning, relationships, professional responsibilities, sustainability and the environment. |
How to Use the Framework
Use the Framework when making decisions about AI tools, AI-supported work, course expectations, research activity or administrative uses of AI. Before using AI, consider the purpose, the data involved, the risks, whether AI use is permitted in the specific context, and whether disclosure or approval is required.
Students, instructors, researchers and employees remain responsible for verifying outputs, protecting information, and following relevant MRU policies and guidelines.
