Appointments

Whether students are facing challenges or working on an honours thesis, they can book one-on-one (30 minutes) or group appointments (60 minutes) with a Writing and Learning Strategist. Appointments are offered in person or online.

What do we help with?

We work to develop students’ academic skills in research, reading, writing, speaking, and learning. See our master list of academic skills for ideas on what we can work on with students.

When should you refer a student to an appointment?

Anytime! There is a common misconception that our services are only for students who are struggling (though, we are for those students, too). Any student, no matter how successful, can likely benefit from extra support and feedback on their academic skills. That said, encourage them to book early!

What can students expect to get from an appointment?

At the end of each appointment, students will be able to

  • describe a strategy or skill to help with their appointment question or concern
  • acknowledge a personal strength
  • report an increase in confidence
  • describe a plan for next steps to take

How do students book an appointment?

Students can book an appointment using our online booking system. Refer them to our student appointments webpage, where they’ll find info about the booking process.

SLS is an excellent resource for MRU students and faculty. Beyond the one-on-one appointments and workshops that strategists offer to students, there are opportunities for whole-class learning, tailored to individual assignments and focused on the areas of academic writing faculty feels students could use some extra support.
