SLS Faculty Support

Let's collaborate.

Faculty and Student Learning Services (SLS) can work together to support student success in a number of ways. SLS comprises two teams: the Writing and Learning Strategists (WLSs) and the Peer Learning Program (PLP). Find out more about our team.

"I was a student at Mount Royal in the mid-90s and took the initiative to attend workshops on memory retention, mind mapping, writing, and research. That experience shaped how I learn. Today, I see the same impact when my students engage with SLS. It’s valuable for them to hear feedback from both me and the strategists. A second perspective often helps the message stick. I’ve had the pleasure of working with many members of the SLS team, and they’ve all been excellent."
- Kris Hans, Business
"The communication skills embedded throughout the consultative process with a Learning Strategist contributed to meeting significant learning objectives in the course and reinforced the value of building and sustaining trust in professional relationships."
- Jocelyn Lehman, Nursing

Academic skills we help develop

Our area of expertise is developing students’ academic skills in reading, writing, presentations, group work, and research (e.g., citation, source use, etc.), as well as strategies that make successful learners (e.g., time management, studying and test-taking strategies, etc.).

See our master list of academic skills.

Intentional model of service

Our work is guided by an intentional model of service to balance our resources, impact, and reach. The degree of collaboration with faculty and customization of academic skills instruction increases from general to supplemental to integrated or embedded.

General Supplemental Integrated | Embedded

Resources

Our resources pages have tutorials, handouts, and templates you can share with your students. Faculty can make use of these resources in the classroom.

How are faculty members using these resources?

"When I have students write an essay in an English literature course, I link straight to the SLS Tips for using quotations handout and explain how it represents my expectations for how students will use quotations in their essays."

"The SLS videos on Presentations are a vital resource for students. They are very focused, with excellent examples. A great tool for students, regardless of their experience with giving presentations. A real confidence-builder."
