What is PII?

To address a high level of demand, we are moving from individual course/instructor requests to working with a program to increase impact and reach for students and make the most of resources through our Program Integration Initiative (PII).

PII focuses on collaborating with faculty and programs to tailor supports for students within a strategic, integrated framework of service. The goal of PII is to develop students' academic skills by strategically scaffolding writing and learning curriculum throughout the program from first to fourth year.

What does PII look like in academic programs?

Most PII collaborations involve working with multiple course instructors as well as course coordinators and department chairs—or some combination—to embed skills-focused curriculum, designed to align with course assessments.

We’ve embedded academic skills instruction in key courses through asynchronous and interactive in-class sessions. Some examples include:

  • tailored asynchronous learning modules on skills such as APA citation, paraphrasing, and grammar.
  • in-class sessions on how to write a literature review or a case study paper, high impact study strategies, and group work.

Collaborating with SLS in the creation of modules tailored to strengthening the fundamentals of writing for journalism students has been a highlight of my teaching. The modules are a powerful tool for students; they've become an essential building block of their first year in the program.
