About the program

Mount Royal University is the only University in Western Canada that offers a Bachelor of Communication with a major in Broadcast Media Studies.

Our degree is based on integrating classroom learning with practical experience, including professional work experience. Students are provided with a broad-based education and a range of communication and digital media skills that have proven value in any career choice. Our faculty consists of former and current industry professionals who use state-of-the-art facilities to develop students' skills. The learning environment matches what students will encounter in the work force.

Broadcast Media Studies students utilize specific skills and abilities in the following areas:

Audio/Video Production

  • New writing and reporting
  • Commercial/creative writing
  • Feature writing
  • Broadcast news gathering and field reporting
  • Digital news photography
  • In-studio and on-location production
  • Broadcast voicing and directing
  • Fact checking
  • Create on-air programming for our online radio station

Media Production

  • Social media fluency and integration across all digital platforms
  • Multimedia projects
  • Video and audio production
  • Oversee production of campus programming (news, sports, current affairs)
  • Photo, video and audio editing and layout using Adobe's Creative Suite and other leading software systems
  • Deadline management

Research

  • Using the Internet and social media as research tools to find sources
  • Familiarity with news media and academic databases
  • Access to Information and official document research

Legal Framework and Ethics

  • Strict attention to ethical practice
  • Respect for diversity and inclusive media production
  • Understanding of legal and regulatory framework for all media production

Student availability

Broadcast Media Studies students are available in the spring/summer semester (May through August).
