Room assignment

New Applicants

Room assignments for new residents are made on a first-come, first-served basis. Priority is based on the date Residence Services receives your $600 confirmation deposit.

Eligible applicants may also be invited to participate in Choose-A-Room, which allows them to select an available room before automatic room assignments begin.

Returning Applicants

Returning residents may be eligible for early access to Choose-A-Room beginning in early May. The first approximately 300 returning applicants are selected on a first-come, first-served basis using the date their Residence application fee was received..

Eligible returning residents will receive information by email about roommate selection and room-selection access.

Returning residents who do not participate in Choose-A-Room, or who apply after the room-selection process has ended, will be assigned a room by Residence Services based on availability. Confirmation deposits for current residents are carried forward.

Room assignment priorities

Room assignments are made on a first-come, first-served basis.

For new applicants, priority is based on the date the confirmation deposit is received.

For returning applicants whose confirmation deposit is already held by Residence Services, priority is based on the Application Fee Received Date.

Themed Communities

If you select a Themed Community on your application it will be considered your first preference, taking precedence over type of accommodation as well as roommate choice. If you want to live with a specific roommate within a Themed Community, please make sure the roommate also selects the same Themed Community.

Requesting a roommate

Eligible applicants may create a Roommate Group through the Residence Portal during the Choose-A-Room process. Instructions and applicable deadlines will be sent by email.

If you do not participate in Choose-A-Room or do not select a room, Residence Services will automatically assign you a room based on availability and the preferences provided in your application.

Gender inclusive housing

Residence Services is committed to creating an inclusive community for everyone living in our buildings.

At Mount Royal University, residence assignments are not automatically based on gender. During the Residence application process, you will be asked to select your roommate gender preference:

  • Any Gender: You are comfortable living with roommates of any gender.
  • Same Gender as Me: You prefer to live with roommates of the same gender as you.
    • If you select this option, you will be asked to select Male or Female for roommate matching purposes.

All bedrooms are private and are not shared. Apartments and townhouses include shared spaces such as kitchens, bathrooms and living areas.

Your selection will be used for room assignment and roommate matching purposes only. It will not affect the status of your Residence application.

Room assignment confirmation

If you participate in Choose-A-Room, you will know your room assignment when you complete your room selection in the Residence Portal.

Applicants who do not select a room will be assigned through the automatic allocation process. Residence Services will email you when your room assignment is available.

You can log in to the Residence Portal to view your unit, bedroom and roommate information once your assignment is complete.

Requesting a room change

A room change freeze is implemented for the first month of each term, allowing residents to settle in and get acquainted with their roommates.

Conflicts may occur, and Residence Services encourages you to discuss any issues with your roommates and RA before considering a room change. If a change is still necessary, you can submit a request through the Residence Portal.

Should your room change be approved, you'll receive notification via email or phone to collect your new keys on the designated date. You'll typically have a weekend to transfer your belongings and complete the check-out process from your previous room. Failure to return the old room keys by the specified date will result in charges for both rooms.
