Provide students with the opportunity to critically explore the values, beliefs, and ideas that shape, and are shaped by, human experience. The understandings and senses of meaning expressed by individuals, communities, and societies through their art, music, literature, philosophy, and critical thought will be explored. Students will also have the opportunity to explore the various media through which cultural expression takes place. They will consider the impact of technology upon both the media and the content of cultural expression.

Students will explore the complex interlocking of interests and relations that constitute social life from the level of the local community through the globalized network of societies. Through the study of the interlocking of material, moral, and political factors informing society at all levels, students will have the opportunity to acquire skills enabling them to both understand and act in the world that they will be inhabiting as citizens.

Focus on the development of an undergraduate level of proficiency in written and oral communication across a range of media. They further facilitate the development of a capacity for critical reflection upon various communication media and their uses. This cluster of courses also provides the opportunity for study in languages other than English.

Undergraduate Studies (UGST) courses help to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and habits of mind required for a successful and enriching university experience. These 3-credit elective courses are available to students across MRU, including those in University Entrance Option (UEO), Open Studies (OPST), and students registered in degree programs.

NOTE: Due to the specific dates of this section (004) of UGST 1001, it won't count towards full-time status for student loan purposes. Students requiring full-time status for loan purposes will need to be registered in at least three additional 3-credit courses for the Fall 2025 term.

A Unique Pilot Offering of UGST 1001 in Fall 2025
New for Fall 2025, UGST 1001 (Section 004) will be offered in a block-blended format featuring a unique delivery model:
- Five half-day classes (08:30 am–12:00 pm), Monday to Friday, August 25–29
- Once-weekly, in– person classes throughout the Fall semester, Thursdays, 11:30 am–12:50 pm.
