The following resources provide practical guidance related to Student Guidelines 1 and 3 from the Guidelines for AI Use in the Classroom at MRU. Be sure to read all the guidelines so you are fully aware of your responsibilities!

Make Sure Your AI Use Is Helping Your Learning

Guideline 1: Students are responsible for using AI in ways that support, not bypass, their learning.

It’s not always easy for students to decide when and how to use AI tools for academic tasks. You might choose not to use AI for practical and/or ethical reasons (e.g., concerns about the impact of AI on the environment). Or you might decide to use AI for immediate learning needs and/or longer-term goals like building skills for your future professional life. If you decide to use AI, you’ll want to do so in ways that enhance (not jeopardize) your learning and skill development.

Explore the links below to learn more about how and when AI can help your learning.

Meet Your Instructors' AI Use Expectations

Guideline 3: Students are responsible for meeting their instructors’ expectations for AI use.

Each of your instructors will have a unique set of expectations for AI use in their class. Their expectations are influenced by many factors, including

  • considerations of learning outcomes for the assignment and the course,
  • program and professional requirements, and
  • their thoughts, feelings, and experience with AI.

Important: Expectations for AI use for one assignment might not be the same as expectations for another assignment in the same course.

Check out the links below for information that will help you navigate expectations around AI use.

Where Can I Learn More?

Conversations with your instructors are an excellent way to build your confidence with using AI for learning in your specific program/discipline. Take advantage of your instructors’ office hours, or book appointments with them to better understand their perspective on AI and expectations for AI use in their course.

For more one-on-one guidance on AI use, book an appointment with a Writing and Learning Strategist in Student Learning Services or your subject librarian.

If you haven’t already participated in the free 75-minute workshop called “Can I Use AI for This?”, check the schedule for the next in-person or online offering.
