ResNET FAQ
Wireless Network
To connect to the ResNET wireless network, select ResNET from the list on your device. You will be prompted to enter a username and password. Use your MyMRU username and password.
Important note: If you are a new Mount Royal student and have never changed your MyMRU password, you may have to change your password through MyMRU. Changing your password synchronizes your account with ResNET.
Wired Network
Each bedroom and living room in your unit has an active network port. Connect an Ethernet cable (not provided by Residence) from your device to the wall network port. In West Residence there are two ports in the bedrooms, due to infrastructure constraints however, only one port is active.
If you would like to connect more than one device to your network port, we recommend purchasing a mini network switch.
New Students
If you are a new MRU student, please change your MRU password. Changing your password will synchronize your account with ResNET. If you have already changed your password but are still unable to connect please see below for your specific Operating System type.
Windows and Apple Computers
Windows and Apple computers usually connect to ResNET without any additional configuration.
If you have a Windows computer and are unable to connect, please ensure that you have the latest drivers installed for your Wireless Network card. If you require assistance in updating your drivers, please contact the ResNET office at resnet@mtroyal.ca.
Chromebooks and Android Devices (Tablets and Smartphones)
For Chromebooks and Android devices, to connect to the ResNET network use the following configuration.
- Select ResNET
- EAP method: PEAP
- Phase 2 Authentication: MSCHAPv2
- CA Certificate: Use System Certificate or Default
- Domain: mtroyal.ca
- Enter your MRU credentials to login (username and password)
If you have any questions or require assistance please contact ResNET Support at resnet@mtroyal.ca
Game Consoles: To connect a game console to ResNET, you will need a wired Ethernet cable connection to the network port in your unit. Wired ports are available in your bedroom or the living room of your suite/townhouse.Game consoles cannot connect to the wireless ResNET network because they do not support password authentication. Please use a wired Ethernet connection instead. Please note that MRU Residence does not supply Ethernet cables.
West Residence: Each bedroom has two ports, but only one is active.
If you would like to connect more than one device to your network port, we recommend purchasing a small network switch.
Nintendo devices: Nintendo consoles do not include a built-in network port. To connect, you will need to purchase a compatible LAN adapter that allows your console to connect using the wired Ethernet port.
Nintendo Switch: The Switch can connect to ResNET-Guest; however, this is not recommended, as the wireless network is heavily used during evening hours and you may experience connectivity lag. If you would still like to connect your Switch to the wireless network, please email resnet@mtroyal.ca with the Switch’s wireless MAC address. For the best experience, we recommend using a wired connection whenever possible.
Wireless Printers: Wireless printing over Wi-Fi is not supported on ResNET. If your printer has Wi-Fi, please disable that feature to avoid interference.
To print, please connect your printer with a USB cable (available free at the Residence Services Front Desk).
Apple TV: Newer Apple TVs (Apple TV 4K 3rd Generation and newer) are able to use your ResNET credentials from your iPhone. Ensure both your Apple TV and iPhone are up to date with the latest version.
Older Apple TV models (Gen 2, Gen 3, HD, or 4K Gen 1 or 2) cannot connect to ResNET’s wireless network because they do not support username/password authentication. To connect one of these models, please email resnet@mtroyal.ca with the Apple TV’s wireless MAC address.
Please note: AirPlay and other Apple-device connection features will not work on ResNET because device-to-device communication is blocked.
Chromecast with Google TV will work with ResNET. The Chromecast physical remote must be used. To have your Chromecast with Google TV set up please send an email to resnet@mtroyal.ca with the MAC (WiFi) Address of your device.
Chromecast without Google TV (i.e. the original Chromecast) that uses another device to stream will not work with our network. Chromecast requires that two devices be able to communicate with each other in order to work. Due to security, we do not allow devices to communicate with each other as we do not wish for someone else to be able to access your device.
Smart TVs and Streaming Devices: Smart TVs, streaming sticks/devices (such as Roku, Fire TV Stick, or Chromecast), and similar devices cannot connect to the main ResNET network because it requires password authentication, which these devices do not support. Email resnet@mtroyal.ca with the wireless (Wi-Fi) MAC address of your device to get connected.
Make sure you use the correct wireless (Wi-Fi) MAC address from your device’s settings. The Ethernet (wired) MAC or Bluetooth MAC will not work.
Please note: ResNET does not allow device-to-device communication. This means casting, AirPlay, screen mirroring, and phone remote apps will not function. You will need to use the device’s physical remote for navigation.
Some streaming devices may offer limited app-based control through their cloud accounts (e.g., Roku or Fire TV), but this is not guaranteed on ResNET.
As per the ResNET Accessible Use Policy, the creation of wireless networks is strictly prohibited. Setting up your own network would cause interference to ResNET's wireless network and a slower connection for everyone.
However, wireless routers may be used with the wireless antenna disabled.
ResNET-Guest is designed for secure, individual device connections. For security reasons, the network does not allow device-to-device communication. This means features like:
-
Phone remote apps (Roku, Fire TV, SmartThings, etc.)
-
Casting (Chromecast, AirPlay, Miracast)
-
Screen sharing from your laptop or phone
will not work, since your phone and TV cannot “see” each other on the network.
-
Use the physical remote control that came with your TV or streaming stick.
-
Some streaming devices (like Roku or Fire TV) may still allow limited app-based control through your vendor account, but this varies and is not guaranteed on ResNET-Guest.
-
If app-based control is important to you, consider bringing a streaming stick that includes a remote and doesn’t require casting from your phone.
Wired Devices (Smart TVs, Roku, Nexus Player, etc.)
You can connect these devices using an Ethernet cable to the wired port in your bedroom or living room. If you need to connect multiple devices, consider using a mini network switch.
Apple HomePod
HomePods can connect to ResNET using your MyMRU login credentials. For setup help, check out Apple's Support article.
Roku or Amazon Fire Stick
These devices can work with ResNET WiFi only if they come with a physical remote. If your device relies on a smartphone for control, it won’t be compatible. To get connected email resnet@mtroyal.ca with your device’s WiFi (MAC) address.
Nexus Player
Nexus Players can connect directly to ResNET WiFi using your MyMRU credentials.
Amazon Echo or Google Smart Speaker
These smart speakers can connect to the internet via ResNET, but cannot stream from your phone due to network security restrictions. To connect email resnet@mtroyal.ca with your device’s WiFi (MAC) address.
Other Smart Home Devices
If you have a different device not listed here, reach out to resnet@mtroyal.ca. Keep in mind devices that require communication with other devices on the network (like casting or streaming from your phone) won’t work due to security restrictions.
Important Notes
- Wireless printers are not supported. Use a USB cable instead (available for free at the Residence Services Front Desk).
- Wireless routers are not allowed as they interfere with the network.
- Game consoles must be connected via Ethernet. Wireless connection is not supported.
If your device is not listed above or you are still unable to connect, please email resnet@mtroyal.ca with your device type, brand/model, and wireless MAC address. We’ll help you determine if it can be connected.
