At Mount Royal University, the Bachelor of Education — Elementary program blends hands-on classroom experience with the educational theory you need to confidently teach Kindergarten through Grade 6. You’ll start gaining experience early, with weekly placements in local schools during your first two years. In your third and fourth years, longer practicums help you grow into a skilled, inclusive and student-centred educator. When you graduate, you’ll be certified to teach in Alberta and ready to make a difference.

Experiential learning
The Bachelor of Education — Elementary combines theory with practice, providing hands-on classroom experience and mentorship to prepare you for a successful teaching career.
- Three co-requisite course and practicum semesters for integrated learning
- Complete your work placement teaching in real K-6 classrooms
- Two intensive practicum placements in your final years

Admission requirements
When you apply to MRU, you’ll need to meet both general admission requirements and any additional criteria specific to your chosen program. Requirements can vary, so it’s important to review what’s needed for your area of interest.

Admission category: High school
High school applicants must submit five Grade 12 courses for admission. These five courses must include the required subjects for the program you’re applying to. These required subjects are part of Group A.
To complete your five courses, additional subjects may be used from Group A, B, or C.

- Mathematics 30-1 or 30-2 or a 30-level second language or language and culture course
Applying from another province or country?
If you're applying from outside Alberta, you'll need to know which of your courses match Alberta Grade 12 courses.

If English is not your first language, you’ll need to meet two separate English requirements to be admitted to Mount Royal:
- You’ll need to successfully complete an English course if it’s part of your program’s admission requirements
- Show that you meet Mount Royal’s English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirements
Are there any other requirements for in the Bachelor of Education — Elementary?
Police Information Check
While not an admission requirement, all students in the Education program are required to have a current Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Check prior to commencing classes, at their own expense. Schools require the presentation of these checks for participation in field experience and practicum. Students may be required to complete more than one Police Information Check during their program. Since completion of course requirements and eventual employment are dependent upon the results of such checks, students who have concerns should discuss the matter with the department chair.

There are financial aid options from the provincial and federal governments for both full-time and part-time students. These include student loans, grants and bursaries.

How do I apply for scholarships and bursaries?
To be eligible for scholarships and bursaries, you must apply for Early Admission from Oct. 1 to Feb. 1. You can apply for scholarships and bursaries from Nov. 1 to March 1.
